Abstract

Science and religion have traditionally been seen as two fundamentally polar fields. While religion has been posited as the domain of the cosmos, seemingly covering the arc of time from the creation of the universe till its ultimate demise, science has been the more stoic cousin, demanding a rigorous analysis of events based on a combination of empirical observations and theoretical analysis. Modern-day science can be seen as the descendent of the tumultuous socio-political-economic and scientific churning in 16th century Europe during the Renaissance. It was one of the many ways in which the emerging educated class challenged the feudal order of the Church and kingdoms and the conservative dogma they had propagated as religion. [...]

Author Biography

Aashish Xaxa, IIT Gandhinagar

Dr. Aashish Xaxa is currently an Assistant Professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences Discipline, at IIT–Gandhinagar. His broader research is on the urbanisation and changing Cityscapes of India, focusing on unexplored aspects of equity, governance, and social justice. His Ph. D. examined the development of tribes/indigenous peoples of Central and North-East India, with special reference to urbanisation, constitutional and legal provisions, development issues, land tenure systems, local governance and democracy, alienation and deprivation, from a comparative perspective. His articles have been published and are forthcoming in international peer-reviewed journals, including ‘Economic and Political Weekly’ (EPW), and ‘Social Change’; edited books and volumes, including the United Nations Encyclopaedia of Sustainable Development (Springer). He has a keen interest in novels, photography, music, and Western Cinema. He has also written several book and movie reviews for varied platforms, such as Medium, Doing Sociology, National Herald, RAIOT, and Youth Ki Awaaz.
